New Federal Rule Means Automatic Cash Refunds for Canceled Flights — Here's How It Affects Your Airport Pickup

If you've ever had a flight canceled or delayed for hours and then had to fight an airline for your money back, that fight just got a lot shorter. A new federal rule, codified at 14 CFR Part 260, now requires airlines to automatically send a cash refund — no request required — when they cancel a flight or significantly change the schedule and the passenger doesn't accept the airline's alternative.
What Changed
According to a July 28, 2026, report by Tyler Foster on The Money Overview, the old system put all the work on the traveler: file a claim, wait weeks, and often get steered toward a travel voucher instead of actual cash. The new rule reverses that. Airlines must now issue refunds without being asked, with credit card purchases refunded within 7 business days and other payment methods within 20 business days. The refund obligation also covers add-on fees — checked bag charges, Wi-Fi, or seat selection — if those services weren't delivered as paid for.
The rule traces back to statutory authority in 49 U.S.C. § 42305 and follows an enforcement pattern that had already returned more than $600 million to passengers under earlier DOT actions, including a well-publicized consent order against Frontier Airlines. Some open questions remain, particularly around how refunds get coordinated when a ticket was booked through a third-party travel site rather than directly with the airline, and how much visibility travelers will have into how quickly individual carriers actually comply.
What This Means If You're Flying Out of San Antonio
Refund policy is one piece of the puzzle. The other, more immediate piece when a flight gets canceled or delayed for hours, is what happens to the ride you already booked to or from the airport.
That's where having a professional car service, rather than a rideshare app, actually matters. When your flight changes, your ground transportation shouldn't have to become its own separate crisis.
How MM Transfers handles flight disruptions:
We track your flight status in real time, so a delay or gate change doesn't leave a driver waiting at the wrong time — or you waiting for a driver who was told the old schedule.
If your flight is canceled and you rebook for the next morning, we can adjust your pickup without you needing to re-explain your whole itinerary to a new dispatcher.
One point of contact, the whole time — no app-based driver reassignment, no surge pricing because your flight got bumped into a busier travel window.
For corporate travelers, this also means fewer surprises on expense reports when plans shift last-minute.
Airline refund policy is finally catching up to what travelers expect. Your ground transportation should already be there. If you're flying out of San Antonio and want an airport transfer that adjusts with your itinerary instead of fighting against it, that's exactly what we built MM Transfers to do.
